2.3. Generation E36 1992-1999. M3 light USA. (М3 легкий, США)
After the introduction of the E36 m3, the racing teams in the United States began to pressure BMW for a homologation version in order to compete in sports-car racing. As a result, the M3 lightweight was introduced in 1995. The car came without a radio, although the speakers were installed and pre-wired car radio, air conditioning, leather seats, tool kit or Luke. Doors aluminum skins. No under hood insulation blanket and the trunk only carpet on the floor. When body insulation is thinner and there is a special carpet for weight loss. In General, these changes have led to Weight 91 kg 200 pounds less than a regular m3. The wheels are 17-inches in diameter, with a width of 7.5 inch front and 8.5 inch at the rear. Tires 235 / 40ZR17.
Changes of the transmission includes removing the top speed limiter and a lower gear ratio final drive 3.23 compared to 3.15. Suspension upgrades consisted of shorter springs from a European spec m3. Before the sale, m3 lightweights were sent to prototype technology group racing in Virginia for final preparation, which included front and back stickers flag racing, and the "trunk kit". In the trunk was double-feed oil pump from a European spec m3, front tower bar, lower cross brace, spacer blocks to raise rear wing, adjustable front splitter. Each owner was given a 1-page legal document to sign acknowledging that any set of elements of the barrel void the warranty on a new car.
All the m3 lightweight cars were produced in Alpine white color exterior with Motorsport flag decals on the left front and right rear corners of the car. There is a fixed wing on the trunk lid. There was some interior carbon-fiber trim and badges side molding and dash to read the "BMW International Motorsport".
Although BMW promised to build approximately 100 cars, BMW never released production figures m3 lightweights reason, however, it is believed that approximately 125 were built.
2.4. Generation E36 1992-1999. Canadian Edition. (Канадское Издание)
Before the North American specification m3, BMW Canada sold 45 European specification m3. At the time, BMW of North America opposes the import E36 m3 because of the high cost and poor sales of the previous m3. The canadian edition m3 were imported using a loophole that allows a small amount of Norwegian-certified cars that will be sold in Canada. Despite the high price about $60.000 CAD, all 45 cars were sold in 3 days at the beginning of 1994. As in other European m3 specification, these 45 cars were 213 kW 286 HP version of the S50 engine, the oil temperature sensor and headlight glass. Each of the canadian edition of cars and individually numbered plaque on the glove box that reads "B30 C50 limited edition canadian edition". Cars also have a numbered engraved plaque in the glovebox and the custom leather case which holds the user manual.
When the North American specification M3 was released in 1995, it was originally not available in Canada. Sale North American m3 in Canada began in 1997.
2.5. Generation E36 1992-1999. M3-R, Australia. (М3-Р, Австралия)

Available transmissions were Getrag 420g 6-speed manual transmission or a PP-II with a 6-speed automated manual transmission, which was based on the Getrag 420g. The SMG-II uses electro-hydraulic clutch and gear shift can be selected using the shift lever or paddles mounted on the steering wheel. The SMG-II was praised for its fast switching time and racing tracks, but some people found his shift is delayed and at the same time change in stop-start traffic.
Total production 56.133 E46 m3 coupe and convertible 29.633. The cars were assembled at the BMW plant in Regensburg in Germany and production from September 2000 until August 2006, production totaled 85.766.
M3 Touring station wagon prototype was built to assess the feasibility of model M3 on the existing platform of the E46 wagon especially the integration of the M3 and wider rear wheel arches on the body-van, but it did not reach production.
3.1. Generation E46 2000-2006. Engine. (Двигатель)
3.2 l 200 CU in engine S54 is the final evolution BMW S50 inline six-cylinder atmospheric engine. On the S54 is estimated at 252 kW / 338 HP at 7.900 rpm 365 nm 269 lb⋅ft at 4.900 rpm, and has a red 8.000 rpm. As with most M engines, the S54 has individual throttle bodies for each cylinder, electronically controlled throttle drive-by-wire operation of the chokes is relatively new for the S54.
3.2. Generation E46 2000-2006. Development and launch. (Разработка и запуск)
The design concept of the m3 began in 1997. The head of the exterior design was Weidhase ULF and head of interior design by Martin Bachmann.
M3 was for the first time in 1999 at the international motor show in Germany, as a concept, is very similar to the final production version. The final production version was first presented in October 2000 at the motor show in Geneva, he has appeared worldwide with the new 3.2 l S54 m-tuned inline-6 engine.
3.3. Generation E46 2000-2006. CSL. (ЦНБ)
TSSL BMW M3 coupe Sport Leichtbau - translated as the coupe Sport lightweight limited edition version of the M3 that was manufactured in 2004, with production in the amount of 1.383 vehicles. It was available in two colors: silver grey metallic and black sapphire metallic.
As the name implies, the main emphasis was placed on weight reduction. CSL has a curb weight 1.385 kg 3.053 LB 110 kg 243 LB lighter than the regular m3. Structural weight reduction measures include the use of fiberglass in different structural points in the car, the roof is constructed from carbon fibre reinforced plastic to reduce their weight by 7 kg, 15 kg and, more importantly, lowering the center of gravity), body panels made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer and thinner glass for the rear window. The trunk floor cover was made of lightweight fiber Board not cardboard how sad it is described on the Top gear TV show. KLR discarded most of the M3s sound insulation, power seats, navigation system, air conditioning and stereo, the latter two were able to be added as free options. The interior consists of fiberglass front racing bucket seats, and fibreglass backing for the rear seats, and carbon fiber on the center console, door panels, door trim and head liner, steering wheel has only one button that activates the M track mode instead of the buttons for cruise control, stereo and phone controls on a regular m3. KLR has maintained a 50:50 weight distribution of a regular m3.
The wheels were increased in size to 19 inches. BMW has taken the unusual approach to supply CSL with semi-slick tires pilot Michelin Cup. These tires provided only a high level of compression is warming up on the treadmill, but poor performance on wet roads and when it is below their operating temperature. The warning was included in the CSL to inform drivers about driving in cold or wet conditions. The brakes were upgraded with larger floating rotors in the front and larger pistons on the rear panel.
The suspension system was revised with stiffer springs, upgraded dampers and a quicker ratio for the steering rack 14.5:1 vs 15.4:1 on the regular m3. Electronic stability control has been retuned and has been added, allowing higher thresholds before the system intervened in the "m-track".
The engine used in the CSL had increased output on a regular S54 by 13 kW 17 HP and 5 N * M 4 lbf⋅ft over the European m3. This involves the use of sharper profile camshafts, a large intake manifold with carbon fibre, refinement of the exhaust manifold, and slightly different exhaust valves. Maximum speed was electronically limited standard equipment, but buyers with current license motorsports could order the soup with the speed limiter removed. The only available transmission is a 6 speed SMG II automated transmission, with changes to software that result in a switching time of 80 MS.
Aerodynamics has also been revised, including carbon fiber front splitter to improve downforce at high speeds by 50%, and a carbon fiber rear diffuser. The front bumper had a noticeable hole that is used to draw cool air into the newly designed air intake. The trunk lid has been redesigned to incorporate a raised Lip, unlike the regular m3, where it is simply added onto a flat trunk.
3.4. Generation E46 2000-2006. The competition package / YY. (Конкурс пакет / гг)
In 2005, a special issue that use multiple parts from UKM. This model was called the competition package ZCP m3 in the US and continental Europe, and the M3 CS in the United Kingdom. Compared with conventional m3, competition package includes:
- 19-inch BBS alloy wheels - 19"X8" front and 19"X9.5" on the rear panel.
- A quicker ratio steering gear 14.5:1 in comparison with the usual ratio of M3 from 15.4:1 in accordance with system-wide.
- Stiffer springs, which was moved to the regular M3 12 / 04.
- M-track mode electronic stability control, as in accordance with the CSL.
- CSU large front brake rotors, but with a regular m3 front calipers and rear brake caliper with big pistons.
- Steering wheel for a KLR.
- Steering wheel in Alcantara and covers the handbrake.
The engine, gearbox and other drivetrain components as the conventional model M3.
3.5. Generation E46 2000-2006. The GTR road car. (Автомобильная дорога ГТП)
In order to homologate for racing m3 GTR was a road-going version produced in 2001. BMW claimed to offer 10 cars for sale, at a very high price of €250.000. Nevertheless, were made, of which 3 were prototypes of only 6 cars. On the road cars were built next to the GTR race cars in a special section of cars BMW plant in Regensburg.
As in a racing car, GTR road car was equipped with a BMW engine P60B40 4.0 l 244 CU in V8 engine. The engine kept dry race cars lubrication system crankcase and was a little upset from 330 to 285 kW 443 to 382 HP at 7.000 rpm. Maximum speed was 295 km / h 183 km / h. transmission was six-speed manual and the differential the same variable locking element, which is used in a race car.
Dry weight 1.350 kg 2.980 LB. Measures of weight loss included carbon fiber front bumper, rear bumper and rear wing.
3.6. Generation E46 2000-2006. Models In North America. (Моделей В Северной Америке)
North American models use the same S54 engine as in other countries, unlike the previous generation which utilize low performance engines in the United States. Due to minor differences in the configuration of the US model power 248 kW 333 HP and 355 N⋅m 262 lb⋅ft, resulting in an official 0-60 mph -97 km / h acceleration Time of 4.8 seconds for the coupe version with manual and SMG transmission. As in other countries, the maximum speed was electronically limited to 250 km / h 155 km / h
The KLR model was not sold in the North American market.
3.7. Generation E46 2000-2006. Motorsport. (Мотоспорт)
In the United States, E46 m3 competed in the 2000 American Le Mans series GT category and took third place in the championship. However, inline six-cylinder engine was considered uncompetitive compared to the Porsche 996 GT3, so BMW started to develop a new racing car m3 on the basis of a more powerful engine. The result is E46 GTR racing car was introduced in February 2001 and was fitted with a 330 kW / 443 HP Version P60B40 3.997 CC 4.0-liter V8 engine. With a more powerful engine than the inline-six powered m3 versions, which were outpaced competitors, won GTR 2001 American Le Mans series gt category, driven by jörg müller.
However, compliance with the GTR was the subject of dispute, with some rival teams, suggesting that GTR was its own prototype car, not a production model available for purchase by the General public. Rules homologation alms for 2001 required M3 GTR road car will be sold on at least two continents within twelve months of the rules that BMW claimed to perform, stating that 10 of the GTR cars were available for sale. Alms rules were changed in 2002, now require that 100 cars and engines of 1.000 should be built for the car to qualify without penalties. Road GTR was never intended for production of this scale, so BMW GTR withdrew from the competition at the moment.
In 2003, the m3 GTR returned to competition at the 24 hours of nürburgring with two cars run by Schnitzer Motorsport. The GTR won the 24 hours of nürburgring in 2004 and 2005) and competed in the 24 hours Spa.
