ⓘ Makonikey

Makonikey is a rural neighborhood on Marthas Vineyard, Massachusetts, that lies on the border of Tisbury and West Tisbury. The Tisbury section is called Lower Makonikey, and the West Tisbury section is called Upper Makonikey. The neighborhood lies between Lamberts Cove Road and the Vineyard Sound, near Makonikey Point. It is a 5- to 10-minute drive from the center of Vineyard Haven.

The district is named in honor of Makonikey point. It is mentioned in 18th century records variously as "Conaconaket" and "Nowconaca" and "Necorneca" erroneous understanding of the Wampanoag term for "old earth" or "ancient place".

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Makonikey was known as the Grand hotel, long since demolished.

Today, the area is semi-rural, with houses, usually located on a lot greater than 3 acres 12.000 m2. Common sense is "the island", although the location is right on the edge of the "island". The winding dirt roads through the woods can be quite confusing, and not correctly marked on maps or GPS - many of these roads are actually "paper" roads, and forest. As a result, most of the residents have placed signs to direct visitors and delivery people to their homes, car GPS and online mapping services, historically accurately mapped the area, but Google Maps was recently updated with an accurate map of the area. These signs usually in the form of some local animal or object, and still the easiest way to find the most homes.

Like most of the housing stock, Marthas vineyard, most of the houses in Makonikey are used as summer residences. Lower Makonikey more year-round residents, and is one of the most attractive areas in the Vineyard as homes and land, as a rule, more than usual for this town, combined with the equestrian and beach access

Makonikey lower and upper Makonikey are subject to 2 separate associations, the Lower Makonikey corporations and upper Makonikey trust. The main Association fees and road maintenance on the beach. The private beach like many other beaches in Massachusetts.
